Travel to San Antonio
We routinely cater to patients traveling to San Antonio for gynecological oncology treatment, and we will be happy to assist you in making any travel and lodging arrangements needed.
We do ask that patients coming from out-of-area locations to arrive at least 24 hours before their scheduled surgery. Prolonged immobility from a flight or a long drive increases the risk of a blood clot after surgery. This risk goes away if patients allow at least 24 hours between the trip and the surgery.
The cost of medical treatment is among the many concerns you may have if you, a friend, or family member has been diagnosed with cancer. There are ways to obtain financial help soon after being diagnosed with cancer. The following programs offer assistance with travel and lodging arrangements:
American Cancer Society Lodging Program
The American Cancer Society, in a cooperative effort with hotels across the country, provides overnight accommodations to cancer patients who must travel for outpatient treatment and need assistance with lodging.
The program is open to cancer patients of all ages, including pediatric patients accompanied by a parent, and patients traveling with children. This program is for patients who receive treatment at least 50 miles from their place of residence. One caregiver is welcome to travel with the patient. All accommodations are provided based on eligibility requirements and are subject to availability and to restrictions imposed by the participating hotels. Requests for lodging are met on a first-come, first-served basis.
Joe’s House is not an actual house, but a nonprofit organization that helps cancer patients and their families find a place to stay when traveling away from home for medical treatment.
Angel Airline Samaritans
The mission and purpose of Angel Airline Samaritans is to ensure that no cancer patient is denied access to distant specialized medical evaluation, diagnosis or treatment for lack of a means of long-distance commercial airline transportation.
Angel Flight is a nonprofit organization created by a group of pilots who will arrange free air transportation for any legitimate, charitable, medically related need. This service is available to individuals, and health care organizations. They will also arrange transportation for those people who are financially distressed, or who are in a time-critical, non-emergency situation due to their medical condition. For more information regarding eligibility requirements please visit angelflight.com or call (918) 749-8992.
Angel Wheels to Healing
Angel Wheels to Healing™ (formerly Angel Bus) is a non-profit charity, dedicated to providing non-emergency, long-distance ground transportation to financially disadvantaged, ambulatory patients who are traveling for treatment. A typical trip supported by Angel Wheels to Healing does not exceed 300 miles (one-way), and we do not normally handle trips within a local area or community. Exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis, routinely for cancer patients traveling daily for treatment.
Angel Wheels to Healing utilizes the following resources for assisting patients:
Gas cards (Provided to help off-set fuel cost for patients)
Commercial ground transportation (Amtrak, Greyhound, Trailways, etc.)
Volunteer drivers (It’s rare when we have a volunteer available as we have only 85 drivers throughout the continental US)
Corporate Angel Network
This is the only charitable organization in the United States whose sole mission is to help cancer patients access the best possible treatment for their specific type of cancer by arranging free travel to treatment across the country using empty seats on corporate jets. This not only improves the patients’ chances of survival but at the same time, it reduces their emotional stress, physical discomfort and financial burden. For more information regarding eligibility requirements please call (914) 328-1313.
Mercy Medical Angels
Mercy Medical Angels’® mission is to ensure that no financially stressed patient is denied access to distant specialized medical evaluation, diagnosis or treatment for lack of a means of long-distance medically-related transportation; further, to ensure the provision of urgent transportation in situations of compelling human need and homeland security emergencies.
National Patient Travel Center
The National Patient Travel Center provides information about all forms of charitable, long-distance medically-related transportation and provides referrals to all appropriate sources of help available in the national charitable medical transportation network. The purpose of the National Patient Travel Center is to ensure that no financially-needy patient is denied access to distant specialized medical evaluation, diagnosis or treatment for lack of a means of long-distance medical transportation.
